The Alhadj Djumaa once carried 282 refugees across the Mediterranean from Egypt to Lampedusa, the Italian island in the Mediterranean which has become an entry point into Europe for thousands of refugees. After seeing a graveyard of smugglers’ boats left behind, Teun Castelein, a Dutch artist, managed to persuade the mayors of Lampedusa and Amsterdam to help bring the boat to Amsterdam as an art-social project presenting the often hidden story of the role immigrants played in European history.
