Rule of Thirds —
One of the fundamentals of photography, the Rule of Thirds is a technique designed to help photographers build drama and interest in a piece. The rule is actually more of a guideline and it states that an image should be divided into nine squares of equal size, with two horizontal lines intersecting two vertical lines. The intersections represent points that the eye is naturally attracted to. Placing the important compositional elements along these lines or their intersections creates more tension, energy, and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.
