For almost 150 years, fiction writers have speculated that machines, through the process of natural selection, will gain a kind of consciousness. There have been predictions that the machines on which man has come to depend will rise up and master him. An age of machine dominance would then follow.
Until today, I had thought a world where machines are feared and viewed as man’s competition in the struggle for survival was only fictional. But these ideas certainly resonate differently with me today.
This afternoon I went out to run errands before this evening’s predicted thunderstorms and severe weather. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed one of these machines in suburban Johnson County. Up until now, only my overactive imagination had considered such possibilities. Has a new era of machine dominance over man arrived?
